Overview of English Program K-6

Kindergarten to Grade 5

The cornerstones of the program are:

a) content area learning
b) oral language growth
c) literacy development. 


At each level, the program features:

  • Differentiated instruction
  • Three key strands: themes, phonics, and guided reading
  • Thematic approach based on TESOL and content standards
  • Thematic units, divided into the areas of fiction, social studies, math, and science
  • Little books, specifically created for English language learners
  • Systematic phonics
  • Interactive, multi-sensory activities
  • Formal and informal assessment
  • Standardized test practice

Interactive materials used at each level include:

  • Songs and chants to promote pronunciation and language structure
  • Charts and pictures to promote vocabulary and elicit speaking
  • Audio tapes
  • TPR cards
  • Big books and individual class readers

Additional aspects:

In K-3, emphasis is placed on developing oral communication, listening comprehension, and literacy. 

In 2-3, children begin writing their own texts.

In Grades 4-5, emphasis is placed on developing greater literacy: reading comprehension, literary analysis (theme, plot, characters, etc.) and writing in response to texts.


Grade 6
The grade 6 curriculum continues instruction in the modalities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with added emphasis on preparing students for the Anatolia high school entrance exam (given in May each year).
